Boon Design is proud to announce a new publishing imprint, named Extracurricular. We plan to publish work by artists and makers we admire and collaborate with. The name comes from our creative activities that exist outside of our design practice. Our first release (EC01) is an artist book by Istanbul-based artist, Seza Bali, entitled One Man Show. The work lovingly documents Bali’s father’s eccentric method of collecting and categorizing his massive business card collection. Organized by the Turkish alphabet, cities, and countries, the images allow us to peer into a very personal archive, one ripe with history and fascination.
Extracurricular’s second release (EC02) is a booklet by artist Paolo Salvagione, documenting his kinetic work entitled element. A frequent collaborator of ours, Salvagione’s history with building custom bicylces and engineering work for the Long Now Foundation inform element—its remarkable craftsmanship and elegant orbits delight and disarm the viewer. Inspired by the ball bearings and circular forms of the work, we created a custom typeface for the cover, entitled, element.
